Day 1307: RIP. Charlie. Kirk.

Yesterday, I gave you the acid test of hiring a lead generator as well as how Dave was upset he lost pub trivia by one measly point when they asked where do women have the curliest hair.

Speaking of the answer being Fiji…

My Drunk Aunt has been doing therapy and here’s our conversation:

Me: How is your new therapy going?

My Drunk Aunt: Great, I’ve picked up nine really good things about business and life so far.

Me: What are they?

My Drunk Aunt:

  1.  A clean desk is a sign of a cluttered desk drawer.
  2. To err is human but to blame it on someone else shows management potential.
  3. Worrying works… 90% of things you worry about don’t happen.
  4. Exercise can include jumping to conclusions, pushing your luck and dodging deadlines.
  5.  Progress is made by lazy people looking for an easier way to do things.
  6.  If you can stay calm while others are panicking… you likely don’t understand the situation properly.
  7. Anything that can go wrong often does… as well as a thing or two that couldn’t possibly.
  8.  She said she has lots of jokes about unemployed people but none of them work.
  9.  Stress is when you wake up screaming and realize you haven’t fallen asleep yet.

‘Managing Expectations’

I spend hours training business coaches on how to ‘manage expectations’ of new high-end coaching clients.

They want everything yesterday…

… and it’s a big reason why they get overwhelmed, stop showing up and cancel.

Also, a major reason why my software establishes a Gantt Chart with realistic timeframes and outcomes for both you and your high-end coaching client.

The managing of those (early) expectations is mission-critical if you want to keep clients for years rather than just weeks / months.

My daughter just went into ‘middle school’… a great metaphor to use with your client is grade school.

My school growing up was:

Grade one to three.

Grade four to six.

Grade seven to nine.

Grade ten to twelve…

Then the first year of college.

In grades three, six, nine and twelve, you’re kinda a big deal.

In grade one, four, seven and ten…

… if you’re a loud-mouthed boy, you’re likely getting beaten up.

Moral of the story for grade school kids… don’t get addicted to being at the top.

Cause re-establishing yourself at the bottom isn’t far away.

What does my experience of being beat up a lot in grade ten by older kids have to do with business coaching and keeping your clients for years rather than months?

Every time your client climbs one mountain…

… they reset to the bottom of the next BIGGER mountain.

Problem:

They want to stay at the top, they’re now used to being the big kid on campus and not interested in the bottom of the new BIGGER mountain.

No growth… no progress… your client, CANCELS.

The only way for you and your high-end coaching clients to grow is… get yourself back to the top of the new BIGGER mountain.

Then start again.

Reaching the top of the mountain simply reveals the next peak.

But you and they hate it.

Until you don’t.

Establishing this early in your new relationship will help keep everyone climbing.

Manage their expectations.

Now, pick up the phone and go help someone.
