Day 1369: Frame. Of. Reference.

Yesterday, I explained why a 6-year-old is excited to turn 7 and a 46-year-old is less enthusiastic about 47, as well as how, after playing the guitar for years, Dave’s girlfriend bought him a piano for Christmas.
Speaking of me asking how it’s going and him responding with it’s not an easy instrument to pick up…

When trying to influence someone, frame of reference is only…

Your language and your messaging will change their frame of reference and bring them towards you.
Here are a few ways for you to alter their frame of reference:
Questions:
‘On a scale of 1 – 10, how painful does this situation need to get before taking action feels like the easier choice for you?’ *Brings measure to their pain.
‘Will this fix itself by you thinking about it longer?’ *Their indecision is a decision
‘Do you realize you’re already paying for this… but just not with money?’ *Time is the ultimate resource
‘Do you need more information… or do you finally need a resolution?’ *Pressures them to finally make a decision
‘Do you realize this is the time where business owners repeat the cycle… or finally stop the cycle?’ *Presents the fork in the road
‘What would need to happen for you to feel 100% ready to move forward now?’ *Their answer is what you need to make them feel safe deciding to work with you
Statements:
‘Waiting feels safe until you realize nothing will change’ *You provide them relief
‘Most people reach this point right before they finally take action’ *Normalizes choosing you
‘The most successful business owners, like Buffett, Zuckerberg, Bezos, Jobs, make hard decisions quickly’ *Join the club by making a decision
‘Every day you wait, you’re voting for the same results you’ve been getting…. let’s cast you a new vote’ *They instinctively understand voting, this vote is for you and their new future.
