Day 1449: Get. Keep. Clients. Rules.

Yesterday I explained how a client of ours built a 20 million consulting practice and also how we do ‘highlight’ at family dinner, sharing the best part of our day like Wifey taking a walk with her Mom.

Speaking of Dave’s highlight being when he farted in line at the grocery store and the lady in front of him picked up her kid and checked his pants for poop…

We were sharing standout memories and here’s what Dave told our family.

Wifey: Tell us a favorite childhood memory.

Dangerous Dave: My Dad caught me killing a honeybee.

Wifey: Then what?

Dangerous Dave: Glad you asked, let me tell you how it went.

My Dad: *angrily*: You just killed a honeybee… Dave, you can’t have honey for one full month.

Later that day he caught me tearing the wings off a butterfly and killing it…

My Dad: *angrily*: Dave, you killed that butterfly… you can’t have butter for a month.

Later that day, here’s what happened:

Mom was cooking dinner, and a cockroach went running across the kitchen.

Dad and I were watching as she screams, jumps up, lands on it, and kills the cockroach.

Me: Dad, do you want to tell Mom, or should I?

My Dad:

My Mom: *what*

Wifey:

The average business has 10% net margins.

If you decrease their expenses by 10.5%, you double their profits.

If they have 15% net margins, and you decrease expenses by 10%, it’s a 57% bump in profit.

I see a lot of high-profile coaches playing offense only with their clients.

Then wondering why they’re not winning on the P and L and losing clients every 3–6 months.

Defense is critical.

Every expense line item must be critically reviewed and this one simple 1-hour exercise can cover your fees for 1 – 3 years.

Here’s two simple but magical questions:

1) Does that expense get a client?

2) Does that expense keep a client?

If not…

… the expense can likely go.
