Day 1295: Fundamental. Attribution. Error.

Dave was watching a magician perform in front of an audience. The guy did a great trick and here’s what happened next:
Dangerous Dave: How did you do that?
Magician: It’s a secret if I told you I’d have to kill you.
Dangerous Dave: *thinks for a minute* Well then can you tell my ex-wife?

Learn to say interesting things in interesting ways.

Your one PROFIT ACCELERATION THING today is:
‘Fundamental Attribution Error’
Or maybe it should be…
‘Words I struggle to spell for $200 please Alex…”
What this really is… an effective Mental Model.
If you have ever received that insanely annoying follow-up text message that says:
“Hullo…”
Or if you’ve seen the meme where a husband and wife are lying in bed and the wife is thinking:
“He’s probably thinking of another woman, bastard!”
And the guy is actually thinking:
“If you clean a vacuum cleaner… does that mean you are, in fact, a vacuum cleaner?”
Or heaven forbid a neighbor doesn’t like a family picture on FB…
… result is the ‘losing of the mind’.
Don’t even get me started if someone gets “unfriended”
Zoinx.
‘Fundamental Attribution Error’ is the reason for the ‘ole “hullo” annoying text message.
This mental model will help you and your high-end coaching clients sell a lot more… while dramatically improving your mental health.
In a nutshell, cognitive bias assumes your prospects actions depend on what they’re thinking / doing VERSUS the environmental forces the person is currently dealing with.
Plain English version:
You assume your prospect is ignoring you or “ghosting you” when they’re actually:
- Busy
- Genuinely Thinking About It
- Overwhelmed and Mentally Paralyzed
- Having Family Issues
- Having Health Issues
- Genuinely Interested but Struggling / Forgot
- One Million Other Reasons You Could List Here
Assume they’re busy rather than evil.
Assume they’ve got some family issues at home rather than ghosting you.
Rather than send a series of emails that say:
Did you not get my last email?
Why aren’t you responding?
I spent a lot of time on that roadmap I sent you!
Hullo?!?
Forget it! I am no longer interested and giving your phone number to every telemarketing service available.
Etc…
Respond to them with the assumption they’re busy rather than trying to ruin your life.
Your mental health will improve dramatically.
So will your number of sales.
