Day 1368: Relative. Gain. Christmas. Dinner.

Last week, we covered a lot of ground, including how ‘you can make more over the holidays by working hard, but you can also cost yourself everything that matters to you’ as well as how Trish the Dish decided to take a chance and wrote all her wishes to Santa.
Speaking of him blocking her…
Here’s our conversation over Christmas dinner:
Me: *awkward silence* Merry Christmas everyone… what are you thinking about?
Dave’s Girlfriend: I went to Starbucks and said it’s Christmas. Give me a coffee with personality.
Me: What did they do?
Dave’s Girlfriend: They made me one that was bitter and overdramatic.
Me:
Trish the Dish: My kid is disruptive and doesn’t believe in Santa.
Me: Is there a name for that?
Trish the Dish: Rebel Without a Claus.
Me:
Ericka: Why do Christmas Trees have such good breath?
Wifey: Not sure.
Ericka: Ornamints.
Wifey:
My Drunk Aunt: I told Lucy, my son’s teacher, it’s Christmas, and I’m barely keeping it all together.
Wifey: What did she say?
My Drunk Aunt: She said wonderful, please transform your child into a reindeer using items found exclusively in your junk drawer.
Wifey:
Bill: We held a contest to choose the best neckwear at my retail shop. It was a tie.
Stu: My grandfather avoided capture in WWII by disguising himself as a Christmas tree. He was highly decorated.
Russ: My boss told me I need to take things to the next level in the New Year.
Me: What are you going to do?
Russ: I want him to know I’m taking it seriously so I’m bringing a ladder to work next week.
Me:
Magic Mike: Ya, my boss told me I have a problem with authority.
Me: What did you say?
Magic Mike: I asked him, who are you to tell me that?
Me:
Dangerous Dave: After playing the guitar for years, my girlfriend bought me a piano for Christmas.
Me: And?
Dangerous Dave: Well, it’s not an easy instrument to pick up.
Me:
Me: *motions to wifey* I’m just going to go sit upstairs for a little bit.
In other news from my BCS podcast…
Time and pressure turn caterpillars into butterflies, sand into pearls and coal into diamonds.
Pressure is a privilege.
Anyhoo…
Your one PROFIT ACCELERATION THING today is:
‘Relative Gain’
As the year ends and you prepare to make a list of what you want to achieve… this might help you and your high-end coaching clients.
A friend’s daughter turned 7… she was EXCITED!
Why wasn’t I that excited when I turned 47?
There are two reasons why:
- Psychology
- MATH
Psychology, cause a 6-year-old wants to turn 7.
And I didn’t really want to turn 47.
Math cause 6 to 7 is about a 15% increase and 46 to 47 is a 2% increase.
One is significantly larger than the other.
It’s RELATIVE GAIN and here’s how it’s relevant to you, your business and your high-end coaching clients.
You need to manage their psychology when math isn’t exciting due to relative gain.
They launch a new product, and it goes from 0 to 60 in sales.
EXCITING.
When they increase sales for existing offers, which are likely far more sustainable with high margin…
… it’s not exciting.
Why..?
Relative gain.
Feels like a plateau.
When this happens… what does your client do?
New product, new service, new offering, new territory etc…
Translation: Often falls under shiny light syndrome and less sustainable with less margin.
Then wonder why they fail.
Like a kid that keeps changing sports…
… never master one and end up with very few trophies / sporting accomplishments.
Another kid doesn’t change sports and ends up with far more trophies / sporting accomplishments over the long haul.
Business owners that stay focused over the long haul exit for an impressive amount.
Help your clients manage their psychology around marginal gain.
In the words of Jeff Bezos, step by step ferociously.
