It’s New Year’s Day and your prospects / clients are writing down goals they’ll forget about in two weeks.
When you’re helping your client accomplish their big picture goal… establish a line between goal and desire.
They usually mess with each other.
Example:
Your client’s goal might be to lose 30 pounds, but their desire is fast food and late-night snacking.
Your client’s goal might be peak fitness, but their desire is a cigarette (still a thing?)
Your client’s goal might be marriage, but their desire is beer with their buddies.
Your client’s goal might be wealth, but their desire is their expensive car, boat and first-class seats.
Your client’s goal might be business success, but their desire is to pass the blame.
Your kid’s goal is professional baseball, but his desire is the iPad.
Your client’s goal might be a sales team, but their desire is to ‘do it themselves’.
Your client’s goal might be to provide leadership, but their desire is to micromanage.
Your client’s goal might be happiness, but their desire is to complain, criticize and catastrophize.
Decide what you really want in life by aligning your desires and your goals.
Here it is in a single sentence for you:
‘Your big goals require new desires.’
