I was with Dave last night at the bar when he got a call from an unknown number and here’s how the conversation went:

*Dave’s Mom calls on speaker*

“Son, I waved at a man because I thought he waved at me.

Apparently, he was waving to a woman behind me. So, to get out of the awkward situation, I kept my hand up and a taxi pulled over and drove me to the airport.

I am now in Poland starting a new life.”

Dave:

Me: *motions to waiter* we’ll have another two. We might be here awhile.

A paradox is something that seems contradictory, but it’s truth…

… When you start to see it, your worldview changes, and you never go back.

In a good way.

  1. The Region-Beta Paradox

You recover faster from brutal situations than you do minor setbacks.

A badly broken ankle signals your body to heal ASAP.  While your minor and ongoing back pain is tolerated for years.

  1. Paradox of Choice:

This is why dating apps make it harder to find a relationship.

Your logic thinks more options are better.

Reality dictates that more options give you analysis paralysis and leave you anxious.

Too many options make you less likely to pick one and less happy with the one you do choose.

Constraints place you into a state of creativity; less is often more.

  1. Solomon’s Paradox

The mechanic with the beat-up car.

King Solomon was a legend for providing wisdom and guidance… his own life was a total mess.

You’re not alone if you’re good at providing advice and not so good and following it yourself.

When the student is ready, the teacher will appear… be a good student.

  1. Effort Paradox

You need to put in 10,000 reps to make something look effortless. Like a pro athlete that can run, dribble, throw and catch as second nature.

What most don’t realize is that they’ve practiced for years and years when no one was watching.

A pro gets paid to practice.

Don’t practice to practice… practice to improve.

  1. Hedonic Paradox

The more you attempt to be happy/peaceful, the more it’ll elude you.

Turn your attention to things within your control and happiness / peace magically arrives organically.

  1. Persuasion Paradox

The people that influence you successfully don’t argue…. argumentation causes people to firm up and get defensive.

Listening causes openness… so if you want to make them agree with you, stop trying to change their mind and come from a place of understanding their perspective.

If they’re not open… you can’t close.

  1. Failure Paradox

If you want to succeed… start failing, faster.

You fear failure, but every success is built on top of failed attempts.

The master salesperson has failed more times than the average person has tried.

You heard it here first.

Now, pick up the phone and go help someone.
