Day 1418: Fundamental. Attribution. Error.

Yesterday, I explained how your clients are working to be the best when they should be working to be the ONLY as well as how it went when Dave chaperoned a primary school field trip and I asked him how it was going.
Speaking of how the parents and teachers were looking at him like they’d never seen a chaperon order a beer at lunch before.
I was speaking to My Drunk Aunt and here is how the conversation went:
Me: What is something you dislike?
My Drunk Aunt: My least favorite part of having a motorcycle cop arrest me is having to hug him from behind all the way back to the police station.
Me:

If you’ve ever received that insanely annoying text that says:
“Hullo…”
Or if you’ve seen the meme where a husband and wife are lying in bed and the wife is thinking:
“He’s probably thinking of another woman!”
He is actually thinking:
“If you clean a vacuum cleaner… does that mean you are a vacuum cleaner?”
Fundamental Attribution Error is the reason for the lame “hullo” text message.
Cognitive bias assumes your prospect’s actions depend on what they’re thinking/doing versus the environmental forces the person is currently dealing with.
You assume your prospect is “ghosting you” when they’re:
Busy
Genuinely Thinking About It
Overwhelmed and Mentally Paralyzed
Having Family Issues
Having Health Issues
Genuinely Interested but Struggling / Forgot
Other Reasons
Assume they’re busy rather than evil.
Rather than send a series of emails that say:
Did you not get my last email?
I spent a lot of time on that roadmap I sent you!
Hullo?!?
Forget it! I’m no longer interested and giving your phone number to every telemarketing service available…
… Respond to them with the assumption they’re busy.
“Just checking in and don’t worry, I know you’re busy… btw I have a couple new ideas for you since our chat. Excited to get back with you. When can we catch up?”
Your mental health will improve dramatically.
So will your numbers.
