Day  402: A Zoom Study

It’s Memorial Day in the USA…

Whether you’re in the US or not, I trust you can take a little time today to recognize those that fought for the freedoms we enjoy today.

Armed Forces Day is for those still in their uniform.

Veterans Day is for those who hung up their uniform.

Memorial Day is for those who never made it out of their uniform.

Your ONE COACHING THING Today Is:

‘Turn off Zoom’

I have over 900 consultants, that work with me, and plenty that spend $100,000 + per annum through profit sharing.

*Translation: Unlike so many others, they’re actually happy to send it cause it’s a small percentage of what they’re making*

The point of this is…

With my $100k + folks we do some private calls.

They ask me to do Zoom and the simple rule is, my camera is OFF.

Reason:

I don’t want you looking at me and I don’t really want to uncomfortably look at you either

Zoom Fatigue.

POSSIBLY a secondary reason… I don’t like the idea of getting caught masturbating or taking a crap during our call.

Sounds like a hard one to explain to my daughters.

“Ummmm.… Kids, can you come in here for a second, please? Ok, so good news and bad news… Good news is Daddy will be home a lot more over the next couple years cause him and his business have been, in 2021 what’s called, ‘canceled’. The bad news is… you, and your friends, and their parents, and every one our family knows, may or may not see me on the news tonight as well as my privates going viral due to a little camera mishap that will be totally exaggerated. OK… so, good talk… gotta run and find a hole to hide in now.”

But then… I don’t work for the government so that probably wouldn’t happen.

I digress.

A Stanford professor, Jeremy Bailenson, is doing a major study on ‘Zoom Fatigue’

What he’s found is that “default self-regard” is a ‘thing’ (who knew?) and it basically means being concerned about how you look on camera has some serious cognitive ramifications.

While in a group… you’re stressing about how you look and you’re not even the one speaking.

Solution:

Turn off your damn camera.

Do your high-end coaching clients a favor…

Tell them to turn off their camera also.

Use the darn phone!

If you need help coming up with an excuse…

Place tape over your camera and say “I don’t think my camera is working… can you see me? No? Weird!”

And then continue talking.

Speaking of “default self-regard”… Stop picturing me masturbating while on a Zoom call with you.

Weirdo.
