Day 843: Jobs. iPhone. Launch.

Last week I gave you a rundown of how the only way to save yourself from a narcissist is one word, ‘detachment,’ as well as how my 81-year-old Dad is glad the people he now hangs around with are not scared of getting pregnant nor do they have acne.

Speaking of the good old days…

Despite loving the idea of winning a big swim race, I was assigned male at birth and comfortably still identify as a male.

But according to Kraft Macaroni and Cheese I’m a family of four.

‘Steve Jobs Pitch’

Steve Jobs was a master on stage when building Apple.

I reverse engineered his framework when launching the Mac, iPhone, iPod, iPad etc… here’s what I saw:

1) He has a sense of calm when he talks, like a Grandpa talking to his grandson.

2) His opening minute is all about making you ‘CURIOUS’ about what’s to come. “Every once in a while a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything.”

3) He builds credibility by talking about past successes (the greatest ad of all time etc…).

4) He intentionally and strategically makes the audience laugh (funny equals money).

5) Loss Aversion. People would rather avoid pain than gain pleasure… he focuses / highlights the pain of staying with the status quo.

6) He points out the competition’s flaws in a humorous way and uses visuals to support those flaws.

7) Uses unusual / dramatic vocabulary like, ‘dent in the Universe’ ‘magic’ ‘think different’ ‘phenomenal’

8) Uses ‘the 9 minute rule’ (backed by neuroscience). The entire presentation is about 90 minutes but every 9 minutes he introduces a ‘brain perking’ change of pace (new speaker, demo, dramatic story, music).

9) Pronouns (apologies to the gender neutral types reading).. he uses we, I, you constantly.

“Well, how do you solve this? Hmm. It turns out we have solved it. We solved it in computers 20 years ago. We solved it with a bit-mapped screen that could display anything we want. Put any user interface up. And a pointing device. We solved it with the mouse. We solved this problem. So how are we going to take this to a mobile device? What we’re going to do is get rid of all these buttons and just make a giant screen. A giant screen.”

That’s 7 “we’s” in that short space.

10) Uses the framework of 1) Tell them what you’re going to tell them 2) Tell them 3)

Tell them what you just told them.

You heard it here first.


Now, pick up the phone and go help someone.
