One Thing: Day 850: Habits. Atomic. Cues.

Day 850: Habits. Atomic. Cues.

Yesterday I gave you five more painful truths and also explained how my grandma caught me texting my other grandma and now things are weird and tense between us.

Speaking of things being tense…

My wife sent me a text that said, ‘your great”

So, naturally, I wrote back, “No, you’re great.”

She’s been walking around all happy and smiling.

Should I tell her I was just correcting her grammar or just leave it?

In other news…

Being a business coach is like having the best day and worst day of your life alternating every 5 minutes.

‘Atomic Habits’

A great book that I highly recommend.

The premise of the book is that you can accomplish your goals by understanding / demonstrating the four laws of behavioral change which are 1) make it obvious 2) make it attractive 3) make it easy 4) make it satisfying.

Here are some of my notes from the book:

1. Your ‘why’ behind your habit is more important than your actual habit.

2. You need to concentrate on repetition and not perfection.

3. You will continue a habit IF you see results. As in, the habit satisfies a need. Depression can sometimes satisfy a need like ‘connection with one self’ the same way lifting weights does.

4. Start your positive habits with a small, easy action.  Example is putting on your running shoes for exercise. My podcast is a weekly appointment with live guests… so I seldom ever miss a recording.

5. Your personal environment goes a LONG way in determining your habits. People don’t start drinking, smoking, or doing drugs alone… it just ends up that way.

6. You celebrate the local sports team etc… so why not celebrate your own small wins? Lots of regular season games, playoff games, series wins prior to winning the World Series. Create similar for your weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual activities.

7. Small positive adjustments lead to incredible improvements / results.

8. Difficult habits become enjoyable when you associate positive experiences to them.

9. You are what you do.

10. “Cue – Reward – Routine” cycle is the foundation of your habits. People wake up, have a cigarette cause it relaxes them. Cue = wake up. Routine = cigarette. Reward = relaxation.

11. Easiest way to eliminate a habit is by reducing exposure to the ‘cue’ that causes it. *Smokers will need to stop eating and waking up*

12. Don’t change the ‘cue’ or the ‘reward’… change your routine.

13. Your habits work best when they become your identity. High achiever, mother, entrepreneur, rock star, athlete, fit, handyman or even my large shoe size could be considered an identity :o)

You heard it here first.

Now, pick up the phone and go help someone.
