One Thing: Day 87: Federer, Jedi Mind Tricks and the Rules
Day 87: Federer, Jedi Mind Tricks and the Rules
On Friday I told you a story about three coaches getting stranded on an Island. Luckily they stumbled upon a Magic Lantern and a Genie popped out.
I didn’t realize there were so many Grief Coaches out there… and their mentors are not overly happy with me LOL.
While receiving untold amount of abuse I didn’t receive a single solution to what I outlined as the clear and obvious problem. Their pupils told me I saved 5 years of frustration trying to operate a hamster wheel of a business coaching model that no amount of enthusiasm will ever overcome.
Guess you could say I took one for the team.
If you want to help people get through grief… that’s amazing and I commend you.
Just don’t let someone convince you it’s a workable business model… cause it’s not.
Anyhoo…
That story made me think of ‘the importance of mindset’ and how so many “Life Coach” / “High Performance” types scream it from the mountain tops.
Yes, mindset is CRITICAL.
No question about it and I agree with you.
But if your business coaching client doesn’t have the fundamentals, understand the rules and they’re not working on getting the right skill set built… NO AMOUNT OF MINDSET training is going to help.
Here’s an example.
I am SUPER pumped to beat Roger Federer at tennis.
And I mean SUPER pumped.
I’d NEVER cold call (please don’t be crazy) to get started but I mean I really think I can kick his arse.
He’s human after all.
Plus, he’s Swiss and I’m pretty sure they just avoid taxes and play badminton.
Not tennis
So, I’m going to hire the world’s greatest mindset coach and prepare myself for 12 months straight before going head to head with The Fed.
This coach I hire will do Jedi Mind Tricks that’d make Yoda bow down.
Tony Robbins sweat.
The Chicken Soup for the Soul guys will write a bad book about it.
I’ll be walking on fire, snapping concrete blocks, using my throat to snap arrows… I am going to ‘get out of my own way’ like I’m dodging cars while I jaywalk.
I’ll pay top, top dollar so apparently that means “I REALLY want it” versus getting a good deal…
One problem.
I forget to practice the game of tennis.
As in the fundamentals of tennis, the actual rules and the skills required to hit the ball.
Ummm……..
I’ll be lucky to hit the damn ball.
Roger Federer could be on Prozac, not have slept for a week (maybe he took up a daily email challenge he accidentally created for himself??) and have his 10 best friends die in a plane crash ten minutes before the match (touch wood) and he’s still kicking my butt.
Today’s ONE THING
Today’s ONE THING is how critical, but pretty much forgotten cause it’s not ‘seductive enough,’ it is for you and your coaching clients to excel at the fundamentals, skills and to learn the rules.
If you want to be a business coach and make $100,000 falling off a log and move towards $500,000.
You better be able to help your business coaching clients build their businesses. You know, to actually profit from your services.
Good news: it’s not overly hard cause they don’t have a basic understanding of financials, up-sells, down-sells, cross-sells, upfront offers or anything else for that matter cause they’re too busy playing solitaire on their phone while lowering their prices.
Bad news: it’s hard work and they’re intoxicatingly committed to “staying in their own way.”
Newsflash:
The likely reason you struggle to generate coaching leads is cause you lack the confidence to help your clients.
So you make excuses for your inaction.
It’s fear.
Here’s your solution…
Get a pen and paper and write down 100 ways to positively impact a restaurant (or any other business and BTW if you go through my ONE THING series I did a two-day series with about 50 ways to instantly help any restaurant profit. I could tell you where but I’m going to make you work for it) …
After creating this list, with pen and paper, watch how quickly you magically end up in front of a restaurant owner.
Talk about a Genie popping out of a bottle. Or like when I work out regularly… I eat better.
My body doesn’t crave the garbage.
You heard it here first.
OK… the craving garbage thing might not be 100% accurate even though I worked out for an hour today.

PS. I just realized I’ve spent the majority of my weekend winning fake arguments with myself.
PPS. I super appreciate the dozens and dozens (strangely there are some on desktop and different ones on mobile) of reviews and subsequent entries to my draw for my Podcast.
Plus if you don’t own an Apple product you can forget about leaving a review cause they make it almost impossible.
I’ve got a friend that’s had a popular Podcast for three years and he has eleven reviews to date.
DRUM ROLL PLEASE……. (Extended drum roll noise)
The winner for the trip to Cancun for Business Coaching Mastery is Tom O’Conner! Congratulations Tom.
My wife created a video of the draw to ensure everyone can see it was done fairly and that everyone had an equal chance of winning.
