Understanding different options of investing is a great way to bring more long-term value to your relationship.
Hedge Funds have had a great run over the past few years and here’s a little run down in case this isn’t your area of expertise and you want to be able to explain it:
Hedge Fund is an investment fund where high net-worth investors (accredited investors) pool their money with an active professional investment manager to generate a higher than average return (not always the case!) by taking advantage of market opportunities / inefficiencies.
Note: Risky
The hedge fund manager typically gets paid a performance fee.
Different than a mutual fund, hedge funds abide by fewer regulations and are provided greater flexibility in their investments.
The hedge fund manager will invest in a wide range of financial instruments including stocks (Apple, Nvidia, MicroStrategy), derivatives (futures, options, credit defaults), bonds (Government bonds), commodities (energy, wheat, oil, natural gas, gold, silver ) and currencies (USD, CAD, AUD, MX etc).
Downsides:
Hedge funds often have ‘lock-up periods’ whereby the investor is not able to withdraw their funds for a set period of time.
This illiquidity limits access to funds in the event of a need.
A hedge fund is a private entity and therefore requires significantly less disclosure… this can translate to a lack of transparency.
Upsides: A diversified portfolio that employs alternative strategies and investing across different asset classes.
Can generate high returns by taking advantage of market conditions and inefficiencies.
Flexibility to adjust roadmap in changing market conditions.
