One Thing: Day 341: Slovakian Women

Day 341: Slovakian Women

Yesterday I was explaining how you can use a goal as your bad cop.

Had a LOT of requests to elaborate on the ‘bad cop’ metaphor yesterday and of course it was impossible to respond to everyone…

Example:

I set a goal with my 7-year-old daughter to get to her bed at 7:30 each night for a week…. and the reward is a trip to her favorite Toy Store.

When bedtime comes… it’s the goal of accomplishing the 7.30 bedtime that does the work instead of me counting/raising voice/being demanding (bad cop).

In other news…

I gave my highly stressed 23-year-old niece instructions to:

“Take it slow, avoid caffeine, don’t put yourself in situations that’ll make you anxious…. Eat well and regularly.”

She ends up on Hwy 22 with two iced coffees heading to her ex-boyfriends and she calls me:

“Uncle Karl, I decided to do a 10 day fast and when I start eating again, I’m going to go VEGAN!”

Anyhoo…

Your ONE COACHING THING Today Is:

‘What A Real CEO Does’

I have the number one podcast for business coaches and it’s basically a series of questions, from successful business coaches that work with my software and lead generation system, that I answer.

I hear a variation of ‘How do I help my client run a better company?’

The logic here is that if you help them build a profitable, growing, and sustainable company… they’ll be able to keep you on and most certainly ‘afford you’ for a long time to come.

They won’t want to let you go.

So, I did some TTT (time to think) and thought how can I explain this with a sporting analogy rather than with X’s and O’s?

“Show me the numbers that you track and that you’re accountable for within your business and I’ll show you where you are on the Org Chart.”

Most CEO’s track sales and call themselves the boss.

That’s like the goal scorer calling himself the owner of the hockey team.

I’ve played hockey with National Championships and World Championships on the line… I remember beating Team USA and thinking ‘we got this’ only to get beat by Slovakia…

FYI their shortest player was 6’1”.

Team Canada is not supposed to lose to Slovakia FYI.

They breed them MEAN and the wives SMOKING HOT in Slovakia, just in case you’re wondering.

OK, enough about Slovakian women, short mini skirts that fit well, hourglass figures, three-inch heels, and bright red lipstick distracting their opponent…

If you’re the top goal scorer on the team it’s OK to just think about scoring goals.

If you’re the coach of the forwards you’re job is to track goals, time left in the period/game, line match-ups against other forward lines, and the power play. *More responsibility and you’re responsible for more numbers than the goal scorer.

If you’re the head coach you need to track things past the score… you need to be thinking about goals against as well and the score of the game and ensuring you’re winning a good percentage of the time. *More responsibility and you’re responsible for more numbers than the coach of the forwards.

If you’re the General Manager of the team you need to think beyond the score, winning and losing… you need to think about where you are in the standing, contracts that expire at the end of the year and prior to ‘the trading deadline’ whose expendable, significant injuries and salary cap. *More responsibility and you’re responsible for more numbers than the head coach.

If you’re the CEO the scores and standings matter but you need to build the management team, team doctors, marketing personnel, equipment managers, media liaison, legal team, tracking gate receipts, attendance, merchandise sales, and ensuring the team is staying financially viable. *More responsibility and you’re responsible for more numbers than the General Manager.

If you’re the owner… you’re responsible for all of that, plus capital allocation, staffing, legal, hiring/firing, lawsuits, insurance, public relations and managing the market value of your franchise, and ensuring your investment is protected.  *More responsibility and you’re responsible for more numbers than the CEO.

See how the owner has FAR more responsibility than the goal scorer?

Placing CEO on a business card doesn’t make you the boss.

Those you’re accountable to… does.

Your high-end coaching client operates more like the goal scorer (SCREAMS MORE SALES) than the owner.

They need your help.

You heard it here first.
