Day 493: Michael Jordan vs Isiah Thomas

Yesterday was my wife’s birthday, which means I successfully bought something that she didn’t want.

To her disappointment…

I managed to keep my 16-year streak alive.

*What woman wouldn’t want teeth whitener and a brand-new, state-of-the-art, handheld vacuum?

I was also explaining how the ‘Influencers’ mess up the difference between scale and growth.

Speaking of scale and growth…

It takes effective hiring to successfully grow a business.

Here is how a recent interview went.

Me: You appear very motivated… How do you explain this 4-year gap on your resume?

Job Applicant: That’s when I went to Yale.

Me: Wow, that’s impressive. You’re hired.

Job Applicant: Thanks! I really need this Yob.

Michael Jordan’s hatred of Isiah Thomas took him and the Bulls to heights unseen before in basketball…

Jordan manufactured rivalries later in his career to manufacture a similar hatred.

Thomas Edison battled with Nikola Tesla.

Coke has Pepsi.

Nike hates Reebok.

The Yankees have the Red Sox.

Messi vs Ronaldo.

Ali had Frazier.

If you play for Duke, you automatically hate North Carolina.

Chris Evert had it out with Martina Navratilova in tennis.

Canada hates Russia in hockey and vice versa.

Larry Bird had Magic Johnson.

FedEx battles UPS and Amazon is about to crush them both.

The list of rivalries is endless.

What is not negotiable…

Without the rivalry and in many cases unbridled hatred… they wouldn’t have made this list and achieved such greatness.

The enemy was the KEY.

Think of your rival in high school that took your girlfriend / boyfriend.

Win or lose, like it or not, you hit the gym and lifted your inner game.

My point…

You need an enemy.

A rivalry.

Ideally, a HATRED.

But I bet you don’t have a business enemy to lift your inner game.

Like it or not… business is war.

I have multiple enemies that drive me and one is the idiot influencers selling you high-end programs that don’t work, sprouting:

“The more you pay the more you’ll listen / do.”

*There is some truth to that…*

But I have a business coach that was in Cancun with us that spends over $250,000 per year in profit sharing and he started at a whopping $200.

When he started, he was a one-to-one coach…
